Fire and Clay Exhibition

The first ever museum exhibition highlighting the humble, gorgeous, indigenous work pottery of Oaxaca, Mexico.

For an amazing, interactive virtual tour of the exhibition hosted by the Museo de Historia Mexicana in Monterrey, NL, go HERE.

The Fire and Clay exhibition evolved out of the creation of the book, Fire and Clay. It takes the content of the book and makes it 3D. This exhibition is a huge achievement and a victory. The ancient, working pottery made in indigenous communities through Oaxaca (and the Americas for that matter) has been celebrated about as much as pickle barrels or soup spoons. Yet this pottery and the people who make it are part of the living legacy of the brilliance and richness of the First Nations people of the Americas. The pottery and the multifaceted knowledge that goes into its creation are, in fact, treasures of humanity.

The exhibition has shown in Oaxaca, Belgium, Finland, Germany and recently in Mexico at the Museo Franz Mayer , the Museo Amparo, The Museo del Estado in Michoacan and the Museo de Historia Mexicana in Monterrey, NL.

The bulk of this exhibition is the collection I created during the writing of the Fire and Clay book. This collection could not serve a higher purpose than this. I co-curated the exhibition with my friends and partners in excellent, clay related projects, Kythzia Barrera and Diego Mier y Teran of Innovando la Tradicion, who also produced this exhibit.
