About the Casa

This beautiful property is lovingly hand made of earth, wood and stone. The 2 bedroom Carrizo House is nestled among bamboo stands and banana trees. It is a wonderful oasis for the artist and digital nomads dreaming of a retreat or to simply relax and enjoy the quiet beauty of the rural neighborhood. Just 12 miles from Oaxaca City yet a world away from the noise and crowds. There is well water and WIFI service, and a sense of privacy and community. This serene home invites peacefulness, focus and simplicity.

French doors in each bedroom open to an intimate and verdant courtyard

Casa Carrizo sits on two acres of land down a dirt lane surrounded by farm fields. Two other residences share the this two acre oasis. The private outside yard around Casa Carrizo is ample, and there are large, communal green spaces on the land. There is an onsite caretake and one of the residences houses a couple who are professional chefs with a focus on farm to table food and run a small restaurant on the land seasonally.

The Main House

The casa is comprised of two petite adobe buildings wrapped around an inner courtyard and surrounded on all sides by lush vegetation. There is a main house with what we call the Small Great Room with the kitchen, dining and reading nook all in a shared space. Above the Small Great Room is a loft with a bonus bed where an occasional guest might stay or you escape to for afternoon naps.

Two Bedrooms

The second of the Casa’s two buildings contains two bedrooms with an adjoining door between them. Both rooms are light and airy with large french doors that open to the house’s private courtyard. The separation between the buildings allows for complete quiet and space in the bedrooms.

The Bathroom and Shower

Casa Carrizo was designed with land stewardship and sustainability at the forefront. Adjacent to the bedrooms is the the ecological toilet that creates zero sewage and turns waste into compost. Along onside of the courtyard, shaded by banana trees, loquats, ferns and sugar cane, is the outdoor, hot water shower. The water used comes from a well on the same piece of land and as you shower that water goes back into the soil, watering the plants on all sides. All kitchen water is also recycled as is the water from the laundry machine on the land.

Our outdoor shower is a tropical bathing delight. Your shower waters the plants!

This little corner of the world

Carrizo House is surrounded by interesting places to visit! The town of Etla with its old stone food market about a mile away. You can get fresh produce here daily as well as all sorts of delicious prepared local foods. Go on Wednesday and the whole center of town has turned into a bustling market. A bit closer is the unexcavated archeological site, ancient church and pilgrimage destination (5th Friday of Lent) called Las Peñitas. The movie Nacho Libre with Jack Black was filmed here. El Mogote, the oldest Zapotec ceremonial center in Oaxaca is a stone’s throw away. The surrounding villages are famous for their quesillo (Oaxacan string cheese) and queso fresco (farmers cheese) and you can get handmade tortillas daily in the villages. Out the front door are quiet country roads, lovely for walking or bike riding. Farmers with horse drawn carts come to the nearby fields each morning to cut alfalfa or sorghum for their dairy cattle. Twenty minutes up the hill is CASA, the beautiful San Agustin Arts Center that hosts arts workshops, exhibitions, movies and events year round. There are also public swimming pools nearby and even yoga classes! Should this green corner of Oaxaca not be enough for you, the hum and bustle of Oaxaca city is a mere 35 minutes away, and of course the state of Oaxaca, endless in its wonders!

Getting around

Having a car makes things easy here, but one of the wonders of Mexico is he abundant, cheap and frequent public transportation. The house is about a 10 minute walk on a peaceful road to the corner where you can get public transportation. If you aren’t up for the walk, Tuk tuks (AKA moto taxis) can be called to pick you up at the house and take you to the market, the ruins or the corner where you catch the bus.
